Tomboys: A literary and cultural history. McCullers’ portrayals of her tomboy characters demonstrate well how the tomboy figure is complex and ever-changing as it continuously adapts to its time, place, and role in society. It also examines the unique insight that McCullers gives as to how her tomboy characters are perceived by those around them. The primary focus of these conceptualizations is based around issues of age and the idea of tomboyism as a phase, norm enforcement, physical appearance and gendered body comportment, as well as the thoughts, feelings, attitudes, and desires of these tomboy characters. This chapter uses the tomboy characters from Carson McCullers’ novels The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and The Member of the Wedding to help gain a more complete conceptualization of what it means to be a tomboy. ![]()
